Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Rumored for September

UFC light heavyweight Quinton "Rampage" Jackson

A report has surfaced regarding a possible light heavyweight clash between former UFC champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira for a yet-to-be announced event in September.

Brazilian website TATAME.com spoke to Nogueira’s boxing coach Luis Carlos Dórea who claimed Rogerio would be returning to the Octagon in September at UFC 119, possibly against Jackson.

“It’s set that he’ll be back in September, and rumors point that his opponent might be Quinton Jackson. It’d be a great fight for Rogerio. He’s a former UFC champion and a victory over him will move us pretty close to the title,” Dórea stated.

Nogueira last fought at UFC 114 where he escaped with a somewhat controversial split decision against late replacement Jason Brilz. Forrest Griffin was scheduled to face Little Nog that night, but was forced to bow out due to injury.

A win for the twin brother of former Pride and UFC heavyweight champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira could put him in line for a potential title shot against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, now that his camp-mate Lyoto Machida is no longer sporting the crown.

Jackson suffered a disappointing loss to bitter rival Rashad Evans that same UFC 114 evening. He was thoroughly out-wrestled en route to a unanimous decision loss.

“The UFC only has top athletes and Quinton Jackson is really dangerous,” Dórea continued. “It’d be a great fight, but the UFC didn’t confirmed anything yet.”

UFC 119 has been rumored for Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Here are the bouts that have hit the rumor mill for the event:

Melvin Guillard vs. Jeremy Stephens
Matt Mitrione vs. Joey Beltran
Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

New York MMA bill’s sponsor explains current impasse on sport’s legalization

A divide among New York Democrats has stalled the legalization of MMA, says state assemblyman Steven Englebright.

Englebright, a Democrat who chairs the assembly’s Tourism, Parks, Arts
and Sports Development Committee, has twice sponsored legislation that
would legalize MMA in the Empire State. Last year, his committee
green-lighted the sport, and this year, the state senate gave the OK.

But following recent developments, Englebright is not optimistic that MMA will be
voted on this year.

Evolved Brock Lesnar doesn’t buy comparisons with UFC 116 challenger Shane Carwin

LAS VEGAS – It was obvious from the first moment UFC heavyweight
champion Brock Lesnar walked into Wednesday’s open
workout session promoting his UFC 116 bout with Shane Carwin that something was different.

It wasn’t about the way he hit the mitts – southpaw – during a brief workout session
or the way his physique has changed during his year away from
competition, though there were those things, too.

No, the big difference with Lesnar in contrast to previous pre-fight
media sessions was the smile that he flashed easily and often. Lesnar said that’s just one of the changes you an expect to see on Saturday night, and you can stop comparing him to his opponent, by the way.

Brendan Schaubs True Calling

Thomas Gerbasi, UFC – Homecoming. Packed house screaming your name. A big knockout victory in a must-win situation. If it sounds like a Hollywood blockbuster, it’s not, but it might as well have been for Brendan Schaub, whose 47 second knockout of Chase Gormley in March was only missing the popcorn.

Brock Lesnar “Feels Bad” for Fedor Emelianenko

UFC heavyweight Brock Lesnar

While champion Brock Lesnar has never been one to pull any punches – although Shane Carwin is hoping he will Saturday night when they collide at UFC 116 for the undisputed heavyweight crown – the brash wrestler wasn’t interested in kicking a downed Fedor Emelianenko.

“It was disappointing. I hate to see a guy like that,” Lesnar told The Jim Rome Show of Fedor’s abrupt fall from grace. “Whether his legacy was more of a mystique than it was, he stood up and he was respectful and it was tough to see. It reminded me of my first fight against Frank [Mir] when I got really anxious and fell right into the trap.

“That’s a tough pill to swallow. That’s a big pill to swallow and I definitely do not want to try to swallow that pill again.”

When asked if it was possible to sympathize with the man most consider the planet’s top 265-pounder – despite his uncanny ability to dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge the Octagon – the former WWE superstar claimed to be spearheading the “2-4-6-8-Who-Do-We-Appreciate” charge.

“I feel bad for him,” Lesnar candidly stated.

Although Lesnar witnessed Fabricio Werdum end Emelianenko’s nearly decade-long winning streak in :69 OH MY GOD seconds, he believes his legacy is still intact because it happens to the best of them – including Lesnar.

“No I don’t. I don’t think any less of him,” Lesnar said of the Russian. “We’re human beings and we all make mistakes and it’s whether or not we can get up and better ourselves. That’s what true champions are made of, I believe.”

Emelianenko’s resume still reads an unprecedented 31-2. He rattled-off 27 straight W’s the last time he lost a scrap.

Ask the Fight Doc: Should pro MMA fighters face stricter licensing requirements?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: , , , , , , — MMAjunkie.com Staff [mmajunkie-staff] @ 3:05 pm

Dr. Johnny BenjaminFollowing the unfortunate and recent death of South Carolina MMA fighter Michael Kirkham, the MMA industry again has turned its attention to pro-fighter licensing requirements.

Kirkham’s death is still under investigation, so it’s not clear if the tragedy could have been avoided.

But after reading the guidelines put forth by South Carolina and other state athletic commissions, MMAjunkie.com medical columnist Dr. Johnny Benjamin proposes some enhanced standardized requirements that may just help future competitors.
