Georges St-Pierre and Frankie Edgar Earn 2010 ESPY Nominations From ESPN

For those wondering how big the UFC has become, wonder no more, as ESPN has announced that both UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre and lightweight champion Frankie Edgar have been nominated for this year’s ESPY Awards.

St-Pierre is a nominee in the “Best Fighter” category, while Edgar secured a nomination for “Best Upset” with his win over BJ Penn at UFC 112 in April.

It will be a tough go of it for the French-Canadian champion, as the last two winners of the “Best Fighter” award have been nominated again this year.

This is GSP’s second nomination for an ESPY. His first came in 2008 when boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. took home the “Best Fighter” award and Manny Pacquiao won in 2009.

Clearly the more surprising nomination was Edgar’s, as it just goes to show how big of a footprint the sport of mixed martial arts is starting to make on ESPN.

The 2010 ESPN ESPY Awards will take place on July 14th from the NOKIA Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles and will be shown live. Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers will host the show.
