It hasn’t been a week since Shane Carwin captured the interim heavyweight title at UFC 111, yet oddmakers have already set an early betting line for his blockbuster championship unification bout with reigning king Brock Lesnar.
Although the scrap hasn’t been officially announced by the organization, UFC president Dana White all but assured it will go down at UFC 116 on July 3rd inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Gambling Gods have pegged Lesnar at just about a 2-to-1 favorite at (-210). Carwin, on the other hand, will enter his second consecutive title fight as an underdog (+170).
Lesnar owns a 4-1 record and was last seen annihilating Frank Mir at UFC 100 en route to unifying the heavyweight crown. After his dominating effort, Lesnar contracted mononucleosis and parlayed that into an infection that ate away at his intestines.
Although his life hung in the balance, Lesnar was able to make a “miraculous” recovery and is now anxious to get back into the Octagon.
Speaking of steamrolling Mir, prior to Saturday night’s victory over the former two-time champion, Carwin hadn’t been inside a cage since putting Gabriel Gonzaga to sleep at UFC 96 last March. His career was put on hold due to Lesnar’s health status, as the 265-pounders were expected to square off at UFC 106, and then again at UFC 108 in January.
Carwin owns a dominant 12-0 professional record and has finished all of his fights in the opening round.
On a side note, Carwin was also an underdog (+125) in his victory over Mir (-155) at UFC 111 this past weekend.
