Spike TV Sets Series Record with “UFC 109 Prelims”

Spike TV has just announced that this weekend’s one-hour “UFC Prelims” broadcast for “UFC 109: Relentless” garnered a series-high 1.7 million viewers.

The show earned a 1.2 household rating which was good for a 1.6 rating among the key Male 18-34 and Male 18-49 demographics.

The free lead-in show featured two preliminary bouts – Melvin Guillard’s impressive unanimous decision victory over Ronys Torres and “The Ultimate Fighter 6″ winner Mac Danzig’s win over Justin Buchholz. Both bouts aired live just before the night’s pay-per-view telecast.

The UFC first offered the teaser for UFC 103 in September to help promote the struggling fight card, however the special proved to be an effective means in generating last-minute pay-per-view buys.

So if it ain’t broke, why fix it?

UFC 109’s “UFC Prelims” broadcast was the second of 10 shows the UFC and Spike TV have planned for 2010. The latest edition just edged its predecessor, UFC 108, which captured 1.5 million viewers.
