The Blueprint: Henderson-Cerrone

Michael DiSanto, UFC – Donald Cerrone will make his third attempt at lightweight gold on Saturday night. That is the good news.
The bad news is that the “Cowboy” will face an old nemesis when he steps into the cage. Ben Henderson bested Cerrone over five thrilling rounds six months ago when the pair squared off to decide the interim lightweight title holder.

Fired Up Jorgensen on Banuelos Rematch: ‘It Won’t Go To The Judges’

Frank Curreri, WEC – Scott Jorgensen knows the feeling all too well. He knows that once a man has convinced himself he will become champion, every loss on the road to the title burns that much deeper inside him. Many conquered fighters wait an entire lifetime for a rematch that never transpires, never allows them to quench the natural thirst for revenge or redemption. Other fighters wait years to settle a score. BJ Penn seethed for 5 and ½ years before vindicating himself against Jens Pulver. Chuck Liddell took nearly 6 and ½ years before exonerating the ghost of a Jeremy Horn arm triangle. In boxing, Bernard Hopkins waited an astonishing 17 years to avenge his setback to Roy Jones Jr.

Frank Curreri, UFC – For years Antonio Banuelos has lived in the gargantuan shadow of close friend Chuck Liddell, and the fiercely loyal understudy has never given it a second thought.

‘A Dying Breed’ Meets a New Breed

Frank Curreri, UFC – When it comes to pro athletes resorting to bumble bee and insect analogies, Muhammad Ali’s “sting like a bee” proclamation clearly towers above all others.
But Alex Karalexis, never shy with his tongue or his fists, deserves honorable mention for his latest quip about Anthony Pettis, his opponent in Sacramento on April 24th.

Restless Mizugaki Ready for Yahya

Frank Curreri, UFC – It’s good to be king, unless you happen to be the royal leader of the bantamweight division. These days, reigning over that kingdom means a coup d’etat is probably right around the corner. At least that’s been the curious trend in the 135-pound weight class over the past eight months.

Yahya Eager to Rebound against Mizugaki

Frank Curreri, UFC – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Two of the greatest teachers of all-time go by the names “Pain” and “Defeat.” Rani Yahya received a visit from both highly acclaimed educators during his last bout against Joseph Benavidez courtesy of a monster right hand the Brazilian never saw coming.

Machida vs Rua first of 2 epic rematches this month

Frank Curreri, WEC – Quick question: What was 2009’s best MMA fight of the year? If the answer doesn’t include the names Benson Henderson and Donald Cerrone then you’ve either got credibility issues or failed to watch these two fighters wage a riveting, back-and-forth battle for the interim WEC lightweight title in what became an instant classic and sparked a furious debate regarding which man should have had his hand raised (Henderson, incidentally, was awarded a unanimous decision, though the “unanimous” part makes one seriously wonder whether the ringside judges understood how to properly score Cerrone’s numerous submissions that threatened to end the fight).

Leonard Garcia: No More Horsing Around

Frank Curreri, UFC – Leonard Garcia sees a lot of himself in Frankie Edgar. After all, Garcia was formerly a lightweight himself before dropping to his more natural weight class.

You’re A Really Cool Guy … But It’s Time To Punch You In The Face

Frank Curreri, WEC – The one and only time that Mackens Semerzier and Anthony Morrison met, backstage at Arco Arena in Sacramento during WEC 46, the conversation came easy and the ensuing admiration was mutual.
