Every year, on August 27, the unbeaten MMA fighter and friends celebrate his birthday. But the truth is, Shalorus has no idea on which day, or which year, he was actually born. And he has never met anyone who does.

Frank Curreri, WEC – Randy Couture once said that he might never have journeyed into MMA had he reached the pinnacle of the wrestling world. But Captain America fell short of his most cherished goals on the mat: He never claimed an NCAA wrestling title (finishing as national runner-up twice) and never won an Olympic medal (though he was a three-time Olympic Wrestling Team alternate). While most would proudly flaunt such a distinguished resume, the emotional void of those unrequited ambitions helped fuel the fire that vaulted Couture to stardom and five UFC titles in two weight classes.

WEC.tv’s Curreri Wins Division in 2009 World No-Gi Championships

WEC.tv’s own Frank Curreri took first place in Sunday’s 2009 World Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championships in Long Beach, California. Representing Robert Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu, the world-class writer showed world-class jiu-jitsu as well as he won the featherweight division in the Brown Belt Masters category. Congrats Frank!

Thanks to the epic lightweight title fight between Donald Cerrone and Ben Henderson, as well as the recent signing of former IFL star Chris Horodecki, it’s clear that the WEC’s 155-pound division is as strong as ever. Boasting a talent pool rich with fiery strikers, rugged grapplers, and devastating finishers, WEC has shown a solid commitment to showcasing some of the best young talent in the 155-pound class. It’s a trend that WEC expects to continue.

NEWCOMER KERR TABBED TO REPLACE INJURED KARALEXIS ON NOV. 18

World Extreme Cagefighting® General Manager Reed Harris announced today that newcomer Will Kerr (8-1) will replace the injured Alex Karalexis on Nov. 18 at The Palms Casino in Las Vegas. With Karalexis out due to a hand injury, Kerr will take on fellow WEC rookie Kamal Shalorus (4-0-1).

WEC ANNOUNCES VARNER-HENDERSON TITLE UNIFICATION BOUT

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – World Extreme Cagefighting® announced today that the long-awaited lightweight title unification bout between reigning champion Jamie Varner and interim champion Ben “Smooth” Henderson will take place on Sunday, Jan. 10 at ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif. In addition to this explosive championship clash, WEC also confirmed the return of former featherweight champion “The California Kid” Urijah Faber, who will be facing top-ranked contender Raphael Assuncao in his hometown of Sacramento.

The Miguels Unite: Torres Teams With Cotto

Frank Curreri, WEC – Miguel Angel Torres and Miguel Angel Cotto have become sparring partners?
Not exactly, but Torres was in Tampa, Fla., for five days last week with Cotto’s camp as the WBO welterweight boxing champion trained for his mega-fight with Manny Pacquaio. Although the two fighting stars did not practice together, former WEC bantamweight kingpin Torres said he tested himself against several of Cotto’s professional sparring partners. Hungry to return to the top of MMA’s bantamweight food chain, Torres spoke in this exclusive WEC interview about how he fared in those supervised exchanges, the Dream Team of coaches he will be working with for his title quest, and how an alliance with Cotto figures into his future plans.
